Rare design that is pictured on page 87 of Copper Art Jewelry A Different Lustre, by Burkholz and Kaplan. I have never seen this particular piece before. It is quite elegant. No style name is listed in the book, but I call it "Nougat" because it reminds me of nougat candy that I ate as a child. The enamel is in brilliant colors of red, copper and lavender on an opaque white background. All pieces are marked: "Matisse". The necklace measures 17 inches long. MODERNIST HOGAN BOLAS SET
Eye-catching, Modernist, brass on copper pendant and screwback earring set with enameled accents. All pieces are marked: "HOGAN BOLAS". While they were students at RISD in the late 1940's, Robert Hogan and Deborah Bolas started and successfully ran a small jewelry business in Rhode Island until it was sold in 1992. They produced jewelry designs in copper and brass using a mixture of hand and machine work. They very successfully produced and sold thousands of pieces of enameled jewelry for more than a decade. Hogan Bolas' work projects a distinctive blend of modernist and geometric qualities. Pendant measures 1 7/8 inches by 1 1/2 inches. Each earring measures 1 3/16 inches long. The book states that Rebajes was not known for his enamel work, but experimented with the technique in the late 1950's. Marked: "Rebajes" on the round hang tag. The discs measure 1 1/4 inches in diameter. The necklace measures 17 inches long. The copper has a dark, aged patina which could be polished off, but I leave that to the next owner.
